After the tragic self-immolation of Goddess Sati, Lord Vishnu divided her body into fifty-one sacred parts to restore cosmic balance. Wherever her body parts fell, the 51 Shakti Peethas were established—holy sites that continue to radiate divine feminine energy across the Indian subcontinent.
But the story did not end there.

Shiva’s Grief and Cosmic Imbalance
After Sati’s departure, Lord Shiva was overwhelmed with grief. He withdrew from the world, renouncing all worldly involvement and immersing himself in deep meditation.
The universe began to lose its balance.
The gods grew anxious. Without the presence of Adi Shakti—the primordial feminine energy—creation itself could not function harmoniously. The cosmic cycle required the union of Shiva and Shakti.
The gods prayed to the Supreme Goddess:
“O Divine Mother, please take birth once again and unite with Lord Shiva, so that the balance of creation may be restored.”
There was another urgent reason.
A powerful demon named Tarakasura had received a boon from Lord Brahma that he could only be killed by the son of Shiva. Since Shiva had withdrawn into isolation after Sati’s death, there was no possibility of such a child being born.
To protect the universe, Adi Shakti accepted the prayers of the gods.

The Birth of Parvati
The divine energy took birth as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan (the personification of the Himalayas) and Queen Mena.
From childhood, Parvati felt a deep spiritual connection with Lord Shiva. In her heart, she carried only one resolve:
“I will marry none other than Mahadev.”
One day, Sage Narada visited her home. After observing her divine aura, he said:
“Devi Parvati, your destiny is extraordinary. It is written that you shall marry Lord Shiva himself.”
This prophecy strengthened her determination.

Parvati’s Intense Penance
Upon reaching youth, Parvati decided to undertake severe penance to win Shiva’s heart.
She renounced all comforts and went to the forest. For years, she survived only on meditation, devotion, and the chanting of Shiva’s name.
Gradually, she even stopped consuming leaves.
Because of this extreme austerity, she came to be known as Aparna—“the one who does not even eat leaves.”
Her penance became so intense that the three worlds began to tremble.

The Burning of Kamadeva
The gods, eager to awaken Shiva from his meditation, sent Kamadeva—the god of love—to disturb him.
Kamadeva shot his arrow of desire toward Shiva.
But when Shiva opened his third eye in anger, Kamadeva was instantly reduced to ashes.
Even this terrifying event did not shake Parvati’s devotion.
Her faith remained unwavering.

Shiva Tests Parvati
Impressed by her steadfast devotion, Shiva decided to test her.
He took the form of a wandering sage and approached Parvati. In disguise, he said:
“Why do you worship Shiva? He is covered in ashes, wears animal skins, and lives in the mountains like a recluse. What benefit will you gain by marrying such a man?”
Hearing this, Parvati became firm and resolute.
She replied:
“Lord Shiva is my deity, my life, and my eternal beloved. Across lifetimes, I belong only to him.”
At that moment, Shiva smiled and revealed his true divine form.
Pleased with her unwavering devotion, he accepted her as his consort.

The Divine Wedding
Preparations for their celestial wedding began.
When Shiva’s wedding procession set out, it was unlike any other. His companions included ghosts, spirits, yoginis, and mystical beings. The sight was both astonishing and terrifying.
Seeing this unusual procession, Queen Mena became frightened and initially refused to allow the marriage.
Parvati humbly requested Shiva:
“My Lord, please reveal your gentle and beautiful form.”
Shiva then appeared in a radiant, divine form—resplendent and majestic.
All the gods, sages, and celestial beings were captivated by his beauty.
The grand wedding ceremony was performed with great splendor. The heavens showered flowers. Auspicious sounds echoed across the skies. Joy returned to the universe.
The union of Shiva and Parvati restored cosmic balance.
